Who We Are

The Global NGO Executive Committee was founded to promote a closer working relationship between the United Nations and the NGOs associated with UN DGC. GNEC acts as a liaison between the NGO community and UN. It helps constituents make more effective use of their association with the UN DGC. In partnership with the UN DGC, the Executive Committee organizes the annual UN Civil Society Conference (formerly known as the UN DPI NGO Conference), at the UN Headquarters or abroad, which facilitates collaboration among NGOs, empowers civil society, and increases public understanding of the United Nations’ critical efforts on issues of economic and social development, climate justice, human rights, the rule of law, peace-building, and other SDGs. The Executive Committee also provides civil society with abundant opportunities to become more knowledgeable about the UN and the NGO sector through its popular Communications Workshops and other activities throughout the year.

Services We Offer

Civil Society Conferences

The UN Civil Society Conference is a significant gathering of civil society organizations, typically attended by over 3,000 participants from 700 NGOs. The conference focuses on global issues, such as climate change and human rights, and has been held internationally. Organized by the UN Department of Global Communications and the Global NGO Executive Committee, the conference also includes workshops and exhibits.

Workshops

Virtual conferences and briefings are crucial for global civil society and UN DGC-associated NGOs during the pandemic. The GNEC recognizes the contributions of civil society leaders who have used online presentations to democratize the UN and aims to promote their workshop sessions. Over 200 organizations applied for inclusion in the program of live workshops during the 68th Civil Society Conference in Salt Lake City.

UN Relationship

NGOs have had a relationship with the Department of Global Communication (DGC) starting from 1946. The General Assembly instructed DPI, now DGC, to actively assist and encourage NGOs in spreading information about the work of the United Nations. The GNEC works with UN agencies and CoNGO to provide information on UN programs and raise public awareness of relevant issues that impact the work of NGOs and the UN.

Leadership

The GNEC benefits from long-time leaders and contributors in the NGO community, and the Board of 18 officers and members is elected by entities associated with UN DGC. They are expected to attend monthly meetings and serve on sub-committees. The newly formed Advisory Board provides invaluable guidance to the GNEC leadership, and the organization offers leadership and support for NGOs associated with UN DGC.
